Sports Science benchmarking visit strengthens academic exchange

The Institute of Education, Wellness and Recreation-Sports Science Program hosted a benchmarking visit from Bicol University, bringing together faculty members and students for a meaningful exchange of knowledge and best practices. The visit strengthened academic collaboration while showcasing Far Eastern University’s approach to sports science education.


The program opened with a seminar on “Trends in Sports Science” led by Dr. Heildenberg Dimarucot. The discussion highlighted emerging developments in the field, emphasizing the growing role of research, innovation, and technology in enhancing athletic performance and promoting overall wellness.


Participants also engaged in a series of interactive, hands-on activities that demonstrated the practical applications of sports science. These included aerobics, pickleball, fitness testing, wall climbing, poomsae demonstrations, and an athlete talk. The activities allowed visiting students to experience training methods and fitness programs firsthand, while fostering camaraderie and shared learning.


“Recent developments in sports science highlight the importance of combining research and technology to enhance athletic performance and promote healthier lifestyles among students. The field has increasingly shifted toward an evidence-based, data-driven approach. Where training once relied primarily on the experience of coaches, decisions are now guided by scientific study,” said Department Chair Mark Anthony Rosario.


“For instance, research on sleep and athletic performance shows that sleep is not merely rest, but a critical component of recovery. Athletes who achieve sufficient, high-quality sleep demonstrate improved reaction time, strength, and decision-making. As a result, training programs now emphasize both workload and recovery, reflecting a more holistic approach to athlete development,” said Rosario.


The benchmarking activity underscores the value of academic partnerships in advancing sports science education. Through initiatives such as this, institutions continue to foster collaboration, innovation, and professional growth among future sports science practitioners.
