Reinforcing its role as more than a traditional study space, the Far Eastern University (FEU) Library created a vibrant, community-centered experience for students through its Valentine’s event, “Reel Love at the Library: A Movie Date.”
As universities continue to reimagine learning spaces, initiatives like this highlight the importance of fostering student engagement, well-being, and connection within academic environments. By blending leisure with learning, libraries can serve as dynamic venues that encourage both intellectual and social interaction.
Held at the Special Collections section on the 3rd Floor of the NRH Building, the event brought together students from various institutes for a curated film screening experience. The program featured the romantic film Letters to Juliet in the morning, followed by the Japanese coming-of-age classic Whisper of the Heart at noon, transforming the library into an intimate cinematic setting.
According to Dr. Maria Gia Gamolo, FEU University Librarian, the initiative was designed to reshape how students perceive and engage with the library.
“The main goal of organizing the ‘Reel Love at the Library’ free movie showing was to promote the FEU Library as an inviting, community-centered space where students can relax, socialize, and connect with learning resources, not just a place for studying or borrowing books,” said Gamolo. “By hosting a movie event, the library creates a fun and memorable experience that draws students in and helps them see the library in a more positive and engaging way within the FEU community.”
To enhance the experience, complimentary snacks were provided, allowing attendees to fully enjoy the screenings in a comfortable and welcoming environment. The activity offered a refreshing way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, encouraging students to unwind while appreciating storytelling through film.
By introducing creative programs such as “Reel Love at the Library,” FEU continues to position its library as an inclusive and engaging space that supports not only academic pursuits but also student life and community building.
