Students from Far Eastern University’s Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (ITHM), through the HRM Society, led Greenscape, an initiative promoting urban vertical planting and sustainable practices.
They actively participated in the vertical planting process, applying their knowledge through hands-on experience. By engaging directly in planting and setting up vertical garden systems, participants gained a deeper understanding of sustainable practices and how these can be implemented in real-world hospitality settings such as hotels, restaurants, and event spaces.
“Projects like this help us understand how sustainability can be applied in real settings,” a student participant said. “Being able to actually do the planting made the experience more meaningful and showed us how small actions can contribute to a larger environmental impact.”
Vertical planting, also known as vertical gardening, involves growing plants on vertically suspended panels or structures rather than traditional horizontal soil beds. These systems may utilize soil-based setups or hydroponic methods, where plants are grown using nutrient-rich water solutions. In hospitality settings, vertical gardens are often integrated into walls or compact spaces to improve air quality, regulate temperature, and enhance aesthetic appeal while optimizing land use. This technique is increasingly adopted in hotels, restaurants, and urban establishments as part of sustainable design and environmental management strategies.
This initiative promotes environmental awareness and innovation among students, aligning with the broader goal of ITHM in developing hospitality professionals who are not only service-oriented but also socially and environmentally responsible. The initiative was made possible with the support of Zip Travel, whose sponsorship contributed to the successful implementation of the project and reinforced the importance of industry collaboration in advancing sustainability efforts within academic institutions.
Additionally, Greenscape also highlights the increasing integration of sustainability into hospitality education, where practices such as urban greening, resource efficiency, and environmentally conscious design are becoming essential competencies.
The project last April 21 highlighted the growing importance of sustainability in public and private spaces, encouraging students to integrate environmentally responsible practices into both academic learning and future industry applications.
As environmental concerns continue to shape the world, initiatives like Greenscape reiterate the role of future professionals in advancing sustainable solutions within their respective fields. The activity focused on urban vertical planting—an innovative approach that maximizes limited space while contributing to greener and more sustainable environments.
