Kaleidoscope: A Collective Exploration showcased the thesis-works of 47 Studio Arts students—spanning personal narratives, cultural memory, material experimentation, and social reflection—a range that Fine Arts faculty member Jomarie Lachica said reflected the department’s intentional approach to artistic formation.
“We are seeing a stronger movement toward artmaking that is not only technically informed, but also research-driven, process-oriented, and conceptually grounded,” said Lachica said. “Students are beginning to understand the artwork not simply as a finished object, but as a way of asking questions and engaging with ideas.”
The department, Lachica noted, deliberately avoided pushing students toward a single style or formula. Instead, they were encouraged to develop independent artistic directions which is a philosophy visible in the breadth of approaches on display in the exhibition.
Central to this was Far Eastern University’s continued investment in studio infrastructure. The department held the thesis exhibition in a dedicated gallery within the Architecture a
nd Fine Arts Building, giving students a professional venue to present their work publicly and within the everyday life of the university community.
“Having a dedicated gallery space is important for the Studio Arts program because it gives students a professional environment where they can present their works seriously and publicly,” Lachica said.
The annual thesis exhibition also carried institutional weight. Lachica described it as one of the program’s “seedbeds for emerging artists” which served as a public moment where students moved from studio learning into artistic presentation, opening their work to questions and responses from a wider audience.
“[The university] has produced artists who have contributed meaningfully to the cultural field,” Lachica added, “and these annual thesis exhibitions help continue that possibility.”
Visitors to Kaleidoscope, which ran from April 14 to 20, were also invited to join a hidden stamp rally around the gallery for a chance to win surprises and rewards.
