Two Institute of Education students have proven that Tamaraw excellence knows no bounds, neither in the classroom nor the arena.

Gerzel Petallo, a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences (BSESS) student, was recognized as Best Outside Hitter and Silver Medalist at the V-League 2025. Her skill, discipline, and dedication to the sport embody the true spirit of a Tamaraw—resilient, passionate, and driven to succeed.

“[What truly helped me] was embracing a growth mindset, believing every challenge, whether on the court or in my studies, was an opportunity to grow. Balancing demanding academics in [BSESS] with intense training required mental toughness, resilience, and discipline. I focused on controlling what I could: my effort, preparation, and attitude, even during moments of doubt,” said Petallo.

She said the award was not hers alone, but belongs to the whole team. She added that she was deeply grateful for their unwavering support “through every up and down, we stood by each other, and together we overcame challenges that made us stronger.”

Another BSESS student, Raji Alliyah Detera, achieved a back-to-back Overall Champion title at Titan 77.7—Asia’s toughest duathlon, while also earning the Fastest Bike Split Award.

“[These wins] mean a lot to me but what truly drives me isn’t just the competition itself. It’s the people around me—my parents, coach, teammates, classmates, professors, friends, and sponsors. Their unwavering trust, encouragement, and belief in what I can do push me to keep giving my best, even when things get tough,” said Detera.

She said there had been moments of doubt and exhaustion but knowing that there were people who believed in her reminded her why she started and why she could not give up.

“Their support makes me believe in myself, and that faith fuels me to keep pushing past my limits. And every finish line I cross isn’t just mine; it belongs to everyone who’s been part of my journey,” said Detera.
