Far Eastern University (FEU), through its International Relations Office, strengthened its global academic linkages anew through the Study in Japan Academic Lecture and Information Session last Oct. 27 at FEUture Center, in partnership with the Philippine Federation of Japan Alumni (PFJA). More than 200 students attended the event, which featured key speakers from two leading Japanese universities.

The activity provided students with a firsthand glimpse of what studying in Japan is like, pairing a mock lecture with practical information on scholarships, university programs, and opportunities available for Filipino learners.

Representing FEU’s partner institutions were Prof. Hikari Ishido from the Graduate School of Global and Transdisciplinary Studies, Chiba University, and Eri Sakaguchi, coordinator for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan of Okayama University.

Also present were PFJA officials Domingo Go (president), Jon Carlson Lim, and John Joseph Silva, whose attendance further emphasized the strong academic ties between the Philippines and Japan.

According to International Studies (IS) students, the session offered valuable perspectives on global education and academic mobility.

“These opportunities inspire us to transform what we know into something actionable and to actively seek out the broader possibilities that await us beyond the classroom,” said fourth-year IS student Anri Semba.

“As someone studying development and economics, hearing these concepts from [Ishido]’s unique academic and cultural perspective broadened my understanding,” said Semba. “What resonated most were his anecdotes about teaching in Japan, reminding us that education is not just about mastering content, but about cultivating curiosity and openness to the world.”

“Studying abroad is not only about learning in a different country—it’s about understanding how different cultures approach learning and problem-solving,” said Yuma Konishi, a Japanese IS major at FEU. “This session made me appreciate cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and academic curiosity, which are vital in today’s interconnected world.”

He also highlighted Ishido’s interactive teaching style. “His mock lecture stood out because he didn’t just provide information. He encouraged us to ask questions and reflect on economic issues and global cooperation,” said Yuma. “It increased our curiosity about Japan. Its culture, food, companies, and its influence on the Philippines.”
