With the goal of nurturing deeper understanding and meaningful connections among mentors and mentees, Far Eastern University (FEU) hosted a session on “Listening with a Heart: Strengthening Mentorship through Empathy and Active Listening.”

The session featured two speakers who shared their expertise on vital aspects of mentorship and interpersonal connection.

Amira Alano led an engaging discussion on gender sensitivity, emphasizing the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces that honor diverse identities and experiences. She highlighted how gender awareness goes hand in hand with empathy, allowing mentors to better understand the lived realities of those they guide.

Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) dean, Dr. Myra Landagan talked about the significance of professional distancing in educational environments, and how this is essential to create respect, fairness, and objectivity. When teachers and mentors maintain professional boundaries, they uphold ethical standards and ensure that all students are treated equitably, free from favoritism or personal bias, the IAS dean said.

Such professional distance also protects educators and students from misunderstanding or conflict that could arise from overly personal interactions, said Dr. Landagan. It encourages students to view teachers and mentors as role models and authority figures whose primary role is to guide learning and personal development, and at the same time, it helps educators manage their emotions and make sound, fair decisions that promote academic integrity and student growth, she said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Hardie Gieben Cruz  delved into the concept of empathy and active listening, a crucial yet often overlooked skill in mentorship. He underscored the need to balance compassion with boundaries, reminding participants that effective mentors listen not only with empathy but also with discernment. His insights encouraged mentors to develop emotional intelligence while maintaining professionalism and integrity.

Throughout the session, participants engaged in reflective conversations and activities that deepened their appreciation for active listening as a cornerstone of mentorship. The exchange of perspectives fostered a shared commitment to cultivating trust, respect, and genuine human connection within the FEU community.

By championing empathy and thoughtful communication, “Listening with a Heart” reaffirmed FEU’s dedication to holistic mentorship, one that not only guides minds but also understands hearts.

The event, held at the Innovative Lab, Room 207 of the Admissions Building, brought together faculty members, mentors, and student leaders for an afternoon of reflection and growth.
